Everything was great with the appointments. Technicians were on time, thorough, and explained it all well. However, the pricing was just through the roof compared to several other contractors we were collecting proposals from. And it wasn’t marginal difference, it was 2.5 times more. For replacing a tankless water heater that costs like $2800, the proposal was $16000 (all the plumbing is there already; just remove the old one and put the new one in). Other contractors asked $7200 for the same job which I thought was already expensive considering it is a 4h job. How much is the labor hourly rate these days?
Not to mention that the reason for the replacement is that heat exchanger on the existing water heater needed to be replaced, but they didn’t want to process the RMA under warranty with manufacturer Navien which was approved already, but insisted I would need to buy new heat exchanger from them. (I asked Navien to send the part to me directly, but they don’t do that with the customer directly and must be done through the contractor). The quote for labor to replace the heat exchanger was $2000 if I took care of the RMA which Navien insisted contractor to do, or $4700 if they sell me the heat exchanger. Considering Navien has a systemic issue with this heaters, I opted to replace it with Rinnai. But as mentioned, the price for labor was just ridiculous.
