Could a programmable thermostat be the root of domestic peace? A new British survey sheds some light on how couples manage the temperature in their homes. According to British website GoCompare.com, nearly one-fourth of UK couples who live in the same home have argued over how warm the home should be.
About one third of couples that responded to the survey said that the woman is largely responsible for determining the home’s temperature, while only one in five respondents said that the man is in control of the thermostat. The survey data also show that women are more likely than men to override their programmable thermostat’s controls., and that about 20% of respondents say their domestic partner wastes energy.
Only about one in six couples say they will heat their homes without regard to cost, and about 25% of survey respondents said that they expect their homes to be colder than their ideal comfort point this winter.
Programmable thermostats are great for saving energy, but the GoCompare.com survey points out one of their flaws: people tend to override the thermostat’s programming.
