Programmable Thermostats and Domestic Bliss

Could a programmable thermostat be the root of domestic peace? A new British survey sheds some light on how couples manage the temperature in their homes. According to British website GoCompare.com, nearly one-fourth of UK couples who live in the same home have argued over how warm the home should be.

About one third of couples that responded to the survey said that the woman is largely responsible for determining the home’s temperature, while only one in five respondents said that the man is in control of the thermostat. The survey data also show that women are more likely than men to override their programmable thermostat’s controls., and that about 20% of respondents say their domestic partner wastes energy.

Only about one in six couples say they will heat their homes without regard to cost, and about 25% of survey respondents said that they expect their homes to be colder than their ideal comfort point this winter.

Programmable thermostats are great for saving energy, but the GoCompare.com survey points out one of their flaws: people tend to override the thermostat’s programming. When that happens, the energy savings that a programmable thermostat could generate takes a big hit! In fact, a single degree change in temperature can increase or reduce your energy consumption by about 5%. In the warmest and coldest months of the year, that can translate into huge energy bills.

Enter The Nest programmable thermostat. The Nest is unlike an ordinary thermostat because with your help, it learns to program itself to meet the comfort needs of your home while maintaining the exceptional cost savings you expect from a programmable thermostat. The Nest provides visual indicators of “green” energy consumption patterns and indicates when changes could cost (or save)big bucks.

With the Nest, you’ll never need to worry about forgetting to turn down the thermostat when you leave, and occasional changes in the programmed schedule won’t disrupt the thermostat’s routine. You can also control your thermostat from your smartphone, so you can dial up (or down) the heat if your schedule changes unexpectedly.

Programming the Nest takes about a week, but once you’re done, you’ll have a personalized program that can cut your heating and cooling bills by about 20%. The Nest can be self-installed in about 30 minutes, or you can have the professionals at Boston Standard Plumbing & Heating perform the initial installation for you. We’re Nest Certified Professionals, so you can order your Nest and have it installed through us quickly and professionally. We’ll make sure you know how to get the most from your Nest before we leave, too.
