Spring is the Season To Save on Heating and Cooling!

If you want to save money on heating and cooling equipment, right now is the time to act! Here are two great programs that you can take advantage of immediately!

Early Furnace/Boiler Replacement Programs

Once again, MassSave is offering excellent rebates on the installation of qualifying furnaces or boilers that replace old, working equipment! That’s right – MassSave will pay you between $750 and $4,000 to retire your hard-working-yet-inefficient furnaces and boilers. The incentives on boilers apply to new equipment with an AFUE efficiency rating of between 84% and 90%+. Incentives also apply to ECM-equipped furnaces rated at an efficiency of 86% or better for fuel oil, or 95% or better for propane or natural gas.

The incentives are available to both homeowners and non-homeowners of currently occupied properties. The incentives cannot be used to convert from one fuel type to another, and they are not available for new construction. Additionally, working boilers must have been in service for at least 30 years, and working furnaces must have been in service for at least 12 years.

To start the process, a qualified installer must conduct a site visit between April 1, 2015 and August 31, 2015 and the qualifying new equipment must be installed and invoiced on or before October 30, 2015.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Great news! The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (Mass CEC) has extended the rebate period for qualifying air-source heat pumps. Rebates of between $750 and $3,750 are available until May 31, 2015. The rebate amount depends upon the type and size of heat pump you purchase and install.
Heat pumps offer a high-quality, cost-effective way to heat and cool a whole house, or a portion of a home. They’re often used to provide supplemental heat in areas with no ductwork, in additions, basements and attics.

With this program, you can combine the rebate you receive from the Mass CEC with other rebate programs offered through MassSave and CoolSmart. The program is a great way to maximize your savings on the purchase and installation of a heat pump. You also get the added benefits of lowered heating and cooling costs, and greater comfort throughout your home.

GasNetworks' 2013 Rebates for Commercial Installations

Last week, I posted information about rebates on specific residential heating, hot water, and heat control equipment that are available through GasNetworks. GasNetworks also offers a host of rebates on commercial heating equipment through a similar program for 2013.

Businesses, including manufacturing sites, large and small retail outlets, K-12 schools, universities, colleges, dormitories, restaurants, grocery stores, heavy industrial sites, hospitals, hotels and motels, large and small office buildings, multi-story retail centers, multi-family dwellings, and warehouses (among others) can take advantage of rebates of $300 on natural gas furnaces with an Electronic Commutated Motor (ECM) that are rated at up to 150 MBH and have an efficiency rating of 95% or better. Rebates of $450 are available for similarly rated furnaces with efficiency ratings of 97% or better.

Rebates of $750 are available for condensing unit heaters rated at up to 300 MBH with a thermal efficiency rating of 90% or better as well as low-intensity infrared heaters of any size. Rebates between $750 and $10,000 on condensing boilers of various sizes and efficiency ratings are also available.

Rebates of between $100 and $800 are available for on-demand tankless, high-efficiency indirect, condensing stand-alone, and EnergyStar freestanding domestic hot water systems. Rebates of $1,200 are available for condensing boilers with on-demand domestic hot water capabilities.

After-market boiler reset controls, programmable thermostats and steam traps also qualify for rebates of between $25 and $225 under this program.

Commercial program rules permit rebates for multiple units, however rebate requests that exceed $25,000 must be pre-approved by GasNetworks to ensure funding availability. As with the residential program, all installations must be performed by licensed contractors, all installations must occur between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013 and all rebate requests and documentation must be submitted within 60 days of installation. Rebates are available for new construction, renovations, and both planned and unplanned replacement of existing equipment.

Eligible equipment must be purchased and installed in order to claim available rebates. A comprehensive list of qualifying equipment can be found at http://www.ahridirectory.org. For more information about GasNeworks’ commercial heating, hot water and heating control rebates, as well as eligible equipment and installation requirements, please contact us at Boston Standard Plumbing at (617) 288-2911 anytime. We’ll be happy to consult with you on the program and rebates your business may be eligible for.

Gas Networks Rebates For 2013

If you’re considering some heating improvements to your home in Boston, high-efficiency heating equipment rebates from Gas Networks are available for 2013! There are a few nice changes to the program, so they’re definitely worth taking advantage of this year. Customers of Berkshire Gas, Blackstone Gas, Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, National Grid (MA only), NSTAR Gas and Unitil are eligible to participate.

You may be eligible for a $1,500 rebate on natural gas hot water boilers with an efficiency rating of 95% or better. This represents a slight drop in the required efficiency rating from last year (95%), but that’s good news for consumers because more heating units will qualify for the program’s largest rebate. A $1,000 rebate is also available for natural gas hot water boiler units with an efficiency rating of 90% or better. Finally, condensing boilers with on-demand domestic hot water (DHW) and an efficiency rating of 90% or better are eligible for a $1,200 rebate.

If you’re looking to upgrade or update a natural gas furnace, you can take advantage of some other rebate opportunities. Natural gas furnaces with an electronically commutated motor (ECM) and efficiency ratings of 97% or better are eligible for a $450 rebate, while natural gas ECM furnaces with an efficiency rating of 95% or better are eligible for a $300 rebate. Both new construction and existing construction are eligible for these rebates, as are natural gas replacement equipment, and conversions from propane or oil.

Some natural gas hot water systems also qualify for rebates. On-demand tankless hot water systems with an efficiency rating of 94% or better, and electronic ignition are eligible for a $800 rebate. Both on-demand tankless hot water systems with an efficiency rating of 82% or better and condensing gas water heaters with a thermal efficiency of at least 95% are eligible for a $500 rebate. Indirect water heaters that are connected to a forced hot water boiler system are eligible for a $400 rebate, and traditional natural gas hot water storage tank systems with an efficiency rating of at least 67% are eligible for a rebate of $100.

Heating and hot water equipment aren’t the only programs you should consider. Gas Networks has rebate programs for heating control equipment, as well. You can claim a $100 rebate on qualified Wi-Fi capable thermostats, like the Nest. These remotely programmable thermostats can help you save money while maintaining the comfort of your home. Homeowners can claim rebates for as many as two thermostats per account.

Boiler reset controls designed for non-condensing boilers are eligible for a rebate of $225, and homeowners who install a programmable thermostat can claim a rebate of $25 per unit with a limit of two units per account.

All installations must be completed by a licensed technician before December 31, 2013 to qualify. If you have questions regarding the Gas Networks’ rebates, or would like more information on qualified heating, hot water and heat control products, please contact us at Boston Standard Plumbing & Heating at (617) 288-2911. We’ll be happy to schedule a consultation and help you choose qualified products related to this offer!
