WHY ISN’T MY FAUCET GETTING HOT WATER?

You turn on your faucet in search of hot water and nothing happens. The water remains cold. So, you wait a few minutes, try again, and realize that you’re still at square one. It’s obvious at this point that something is wrong. Just the same as many plumbing issues that require maintenance, no hot water can be related to a variety of causes. Maybe it’s something simple. Maybe it’s something that requires more of your time. And in some cases, you may need to call in a professional to diagnose and solve the problem.

For now, let’s review some of the most common reasons why a faucet may not get hot water:

1. The Water Valve is Turned Off
This is the first thing you should check. If you or someone else accidentally turned off the hot water valve, turn it back on and see if that solves your problem. It’s likely that it will.[i] Not only is this issue quick to solve, but it doesn’t require the assistance of a plumber. It only takes a couple seconds to do it yourself. Tip: if you’re not getting hot or cold water, the main supply valve may have been turned off. Check this before you call a plumber.

2. Blocked Faucet
As your faucet ages, you may begin to run into issues with its performance. Even though you’re still getting water, there could be something wrong with the hot water supply. A professional plumber can inspect your faucet, pinpoint the problem, and provide you with options for fixing it. If your faucet is long past due to be replaced, this is often your best option. Not only will it solve your problem, but it could also bring some much needed “life” to your old bathroom. Note: new faucets can go bad just the same as old ones. It’s not expected, but it’s a possibility.

3. Malfunctioning Hot Water Heater
Remember, hot water doesn’t magically appear at every sink and tub in your home. It’s produced by your hot water heater, which requires regular maintenance. If your hot water heater is malfunctioning, it may require professional service or replacement. Note: not every issue with your water heater is serious. For example, you may need to adjust the temperature setting. Doing so could be a quick solution to an annoying problem.

Don’t Live with Cold Water (Only)
Cold water is better than no water at all, but there are times – such as when taking a shower or bath – that hot water is necessary. If one or more of your faucets aren’t getting hot water, it’s time to find out why. Once you’ve done everything you can by checking the obvious, reach out to a professional.
