WHEN TO REPLACE A SINK FAUCET

Replacing a sink faucet may not be your idea of the most exciting home improvement project, but there’s likely to come a time when it’s necessary. There is no right or wrong time to replace a sink faucet, but there are situations when it makes sense to take action. Consider the following:

1. Your Faucet is Old
An old sink faucet can drag down the overall look and feel of any space. For example, you’ve renovated your entire bathroom – complete with new floors and vanity – but you kept your old faucet. By swapping it out for something more modern, you can quickly take the appearance of your space to the next level.[i]

2. It’s Not Working
If your sink faucet is no longer working, it may be time for a change. Common issues include low water pressure, handles that no longer tighten, or leaks. Before you replace your faucet in hopes of it fixing your problem, make sure you know that it’s the culprit. You may need to consult with a plumber to pinpoint exactly why your faucet isn’t working.

3. No Longer Functional
What worked for you and your home in the past, may not work for you in the future. If your faucet is no longer functional, consider making a change. For example, you may want to swap out your old kitchen faucet for one with a pull-down hose. This will add functionality to your space, such as when cleaning dishes and filling pots. There are more faucets on the market today than ever before. So, if you want to make a change, consider all your options before taking action.

4. It’s Leaking
This goes along with point #2 above, but deserves its own section. A leaking faucet may not bother you at first, especially if it’s a small leak. However, as time goes by, you’ll realize just how annoying it is. A leak can do all the following:

  • Increase your water bill
  • Damage your home (such as if the leak is under the vanity or cabinet)
  • Annoy you with a drip, drip, drip sound

Remember, a leaking faucet doesn’t necessarily need replaced. You may be able to swap out an old part for a new one and keep the faucet itself. However, there are times when it makes more sense to simply start fresh.

Don’t Wait to Buy a New Faucet
If you’ve been thinking of replacing a faucet in your home, consider the steps you must take to complete the project. It’s often easiest if you consult with a plumber, as this ensures that you make all the right decisions. For instance, your sink may only be compatible with a certain type of faucet.
