During the hot summer months in Boston, you’ll continually find yourself seeking cool air indoors.
When it comes to your home, there are many ways to cool it down, with air conditioning one of the best.
If your existing home has an AC system, you can rely on it to cool your home and keep you comfortable this summer. Conversely, if your home doesn’t have AC or you’re looking to upgrade, it’s important to consider all your options.
There are three primary types of AC systems for residential use. These include:
1. Central Air Conditioning
This is the most common type of cooling system, as it’s designed with the ability to efficiently cool homes of all sizes. A central air conditioner circulates air throughout your home via supply and return ducts. Cool air is pushed through registers on the floors or in the wall. From there, warm air circulates back to the supply ducts.
Regardless of the size of your home, there’s a central AC system that can handle it. However, if your home doesn’t currently have central AC, adding it can be a challenge. This requires opening up floors and walls to install ductwork.
2. Ductless Air Conditioning
Just the same as central air conditioning, a ductless set up has both an indoor unit and outdoor compressor. But there’s one major difference: A ductless air conditioning system doesn’t rely on ductwork to transfer air. Instead, there are indoor handling units, all of which are connected to the outdoor unit, that pump cool air into your home. You can create a zone for each unit, allowing you to adjust the temperature by floor or room. Ductless air conditioning is the best way to add AC to a pre-existing home, as you don’t have to open up walls and floors. It’s also a good option when expanding, such as building an addition or finishing a living space.
3. Window Air Conditioner
Even though a window air conditioner is not designed to cool your entire home, it’s effective at cooling a specific room (or maybe even two). As the name suggests, this type of unit is installed in a window in your home. For example, if you want to cool your bedroom, you can place a unit in a window, plug it in and enjoy the cool air. Window air conditioners work by blowing cool air into your space, while emitting warm air outside your home.
These units are best for the following people:
- Those who only want to cool a small space, such as a bedroom
- Those who don’t want to tackle the process of adding central AC or ductless AC
- Those who are looking to cool their home, without the cost associated with a large project
- Those who rent a home or apartment without AC
